Balloon Art!

To Make a Basic Topiary:

  1. Inflate two 5" balloons (or 6" Heart balloons) and tie together to make a "duplet." Repeat to make six duplets.
  2. Twist two duplets together, intersecting at the knots.
  3. Add the next duplet, bringing it right through the middle intersecting knots, and continue with the remaining duplets until you have a beautiful sphere of 12 balloons.
  4. Tape the large washer inside the design dish.
  5. Turn the design dish upside down and cool glue the pedestal to the design.
  6. Stretch a 5" balloon over the top of the pedestal to create more surface for the cool glue and to soften the edge so balloons won't pop. Cover the stretched balloon with cool glue.
  7. Strategically place the topiary sphere on top of the pedestal.
  8. Accent as desired.

Ingredients:

  • 21" Pedestal
  • Cool Glue
  • 6" Design Dish
  • Pink Foam Wire
  • Ribbon
  • 16 5" Pink latex balloons
  • 2 5" Black latex balloons
  • Larger Washer
  • Raffia

To Make an Animal Shaped Balloon:

Follow instructions for basic topiary, then follow instructions below:

  1. To make the eyes, under inflate two 5" Onyx Black balloons to 2", tie closed, and glue in place.
  2. To make the snout, under inflate a Pink 5" balloon to 3" and tie. Push the neck end of the balloon through the body until it reaches the other side. Grab the neck (through the balloon) while still holding the balloon with your other hand. Twist three times to wrap latex around the neck into a ball, and tie a piece of ribbon around the ball to secure. Glue in place.
  3. Glue a small piece of foam wire for the tail.
  4. Underinflate the last two 5" Pink balloons and cool glue to the base.
  5. Make a heart shape out of foam wire and cool glue to the base.
  6. Add ribbon and raffia to conceal mechanics and accent as desired.

This can easily be transformed into a dog, a bunny, and other animals.

Crafts!

Homemade Crayons:
Use your candy molds to create a kid friendly coloring tool!

Ingredients:

  1. Peel all paper off of the crayons. Some colors will melt better than others, but you can test by rubbing the crayon on your finger. If the color comes off the crayon should be okay for melting.
  2. Break the crayons into small pieces and place in microwave safe dish. Heat for approximately 1 minute, then stir and continue heating in increments of 30 seconds until the crayon is completely melted. (**Please note: Do not allow the mixture to boil or become too hot, since it may cause damage to your candy mold.**)
  3. Pour melted crayon into candy mold, and allow to set for approximately 20 minutes. The mold can also be placed in a freezer or refrigerator to cool completely.

These custom crayons make great party favors. These instructions can be modified to make decorative soaps!

Dora the Explorer Backpack Craft:
A fun activity for kids and a great way to carry home party favors!

Ingredients:

  • 3 sheets (12 in. by 18 in.) of thick purple craft foam (available at craft stores)
  • 1 small sheet each of red, yellow, and white craft foam
  • 3-1/2-in. strip of self-adhesive Velcro
  • Permanent markers
  • Plain white paper
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Stapler
  • Purple yarn
  • Craft glue (optional)
  1. Cut two 2" x 18" strips from the long edge of one of the purple sheets to use for Backpack's straps.
  2. Cut a 10-1/2" square from the second sheet of purple craft foam to use for the front of Backpack. Cut a 10-1/2" x 15" rectangle from the third sheet of purple craft foam to use for the back of the Backpack. Lay the square on top of the rectangle so that the rectangle's extra 3" hang over the top. Fold these 3" down over the square to form Backpack's flap. Round the edges of the flap with scissors. Using a hole punch, make holes through both sheets along the three straight edges, about 1" apart. (This is where you'll lace the yarn.)
  3. Staple the ends of the foam strips from Step 1 to the back of rectangle, avoiding the flap, to form Backpack's straps.
  4. Cut a 1" x 7" strip from the leftover purple craft foam to use for Map's strap. Staple the ends of the strap together to form a circle and then staple this loop to front of the square on the left side.
  5. Line up the holes on the square and rectangle and lace them together with purple yarn. Attach Velcro strips to the inside of the flap and to the top of the square.
  6. With permanent markers, draw the features onto Backpack and onto a sheet of plain white paper (for Map) or draw them on the craft foam and cut them out. Use red foam for the mouth, yellow for the eyebrows, and white for the eyes. Glue them on with craft glue.

Play the Dora Backpack Game.

Homemade Play-Dough:
Kids can get the ingredients measured, but parents may want to do the stirring over the stove.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp. food coloring
  • 2 tsp. oil
  • 1 cup water
  1. Show kids how to measure out the first three ingredients and let them stir these together in a medium-sized saucepan.
  2. Over medium heat, gradually stir in 1 cup of water, 1 teaspoon of food coloring, and 2 teaspoons of oil.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring continually, until the mixture forms into a sticky, gooey ball. The mixture will burn on the bottom if you aren't careful.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat.
  5. Let the dough cool for 15-30 minutes before your kids play with it. Keep the dough in an air-tight plastic bowl when not in use.
